Loss

 {source}

 It's hard to come up with a title to a blog post that you know is going to be difficult to write.

This past Wednesday, while we were in Waterton, Canada, we were informed of a very unfortunate and chilling incident. In respect for the family, I am not going to mention any names.

Jordan's mom {Jaime} went to do some laundry while the rest of us were out hiking and checked her e-mail. In this e-mail, it talked about sending notes about this person to be put in a scrapbook. "We all loved him," the e-mail read. Loved him? As in past tense? She didn't have a phone with her, and so she had no way to confirm it, but she realized what it meant. When we arrived back from our hike, she ran up to the car, tears in her eyes, needing to have the phone to call her friend who had sent out the e-mail. The phone call confirmed it. A very dear friend to my husband's family had died. He was 15.

Let me just begin by saying that I have never met this boy in my life. I had only heard that he was going to watch the dog while we were gone. But as soon as I heard the news, my heart broke. How could this happen to a 15-year-old boy? Fifteen years is hardly long enough to understand life, let alone live it.

When Jaime told us what had happened, at first I had no idea who she was talking about. Then it clicked. Wait, the kid that was watching your dog? The teenager? Even though I didn't know him, I instantly wanted to do something to comfort his family. To know what I could to do to help {which as a person from a distance, who didn't know their son, I wasn't able to do much}. To do something, even if it was to feel sorrow on this boy's behalf.

And then we found out that he had shot himself. And my heart broke even more. I, too, have at a very low time in my life felt so much despair that I felt that was the only way out. Of course, I did not follow that path, but I felt even more sorrow for this poor boy. What had caused him so much pain in his life that he felt the need to end it? I wished there was anything I could have done to reverse it. Even though I had never met or spoken to him.

Today at church, a grief counselor came and spoke to the young men and women in the ward. The question that I had burning in me came up: What if I had done *this* differently? What if I had done something? Anything at all to change the outcome.

And she expressed to us something very wise: The idea that "if only I had..." cheats us. In hindsight, we have perfect vision, but we cannot go back and change the past. We did what we could at the time with the information we had.

I know that wishing I had done something ultimately does nothing. I'm sure many other people have felt the same way, either about this boy or someone else they have cared for. He was gone, and there was nothing I could do to change that. But I wish to pass on something that I have learned from this experience:
Maybe I can be a little nicer.
Maybe I can show a little more sympathy; empathy
Maybe I could say a kind word; express my positive thoughts
Maybe I could try a little bit harder to be a little bit nicer.

Close to the end of the meeting, his father spoke. And I felt so much peace radiating from that man who's fifteen year old boy had died just days before. I was so amazed at the strength this man had, when I, who didn't even know this man's child, found it hard to control my emotions at times. I was so grateful for his positive and loving attitude toward all of us in that room. He had suffered an immeasurable loss and still was able to serve others.

{And to end on a more religious note, I just want to say this: I know that you are never alone. I know that Jesus Christ has suffered just for you. He has suffered all of your pains. And He will always, always, always stand by you. He knows your pains, sufferings, heartaches. He knows everything that you have gone through and will go through and I promise that he is there by you. I promise that he loves you...YOU...with an infinite love that you cannot even begin to comprehend. If you ever feel lonely or depressed or lost, He will always be there by your side to lift you up. If only you turn to Him.}

If any of you ever feel lonely, lost, depressed, or so close to the edge that you feel the only way out is death, please contact someone! There are so many people out there that love you and are willing to talk to you. Even if you want to remain anonymous, there are phone numbers out there you can call. Heck, contact me! I will be your best friend! Because the thought of losing a precious life is so sad to me. Because I know you are precious. Because you have a life worth living, even if it doesn't always feel like it.

Top Five Friday

This week has been pretty awesome. Other than all the driving, Jordan and I have a lot of awesome things happening with our family right now. It's going to be hard to narrow my week to just 5 things, but here goes!

Top Five Friday

{Isn't she such a gorgeous woman??}

1. Yesterday was my grandma's birthday {on my dad's side} and I was SO lucky to go to lunch with her and two of my aunts because we are in Utah!!

So I want to wish my lovely Grandmother a very happy birthday with many, many more to come because let's face it, life wouldn't be as good without Grandma! {Especially my grandma}.

2. My brother and sister-in-law are having a baby this month!!! {Yay!!!} And I am SO excited. And lucky to take some maternity pictures. {Want to see some more? Check out my Facebook page here}. And isn't she so stinkin' gorgeous?! I am just in love with this shoot!

3. Oh yeah, speaking of eventful months, did I mention my other brother is getting married? Yup, on August 18. They already had some engagements, but I took some of my own. Gosh, they are so adorable together. I love the love between the two of them. I'm excited for their wedding. Oh yeah, check out more photos here.

4. Spending lots of time with family. It has been so awesome to spend so much time with family {and friends} that Jordan and I have been away from for the past 10 months away from everyone. I'm going to be sad when we leave :( But at least we'll only be 10 hours away instead of 20!

5. I am going to love living in California. Look at this gorgeousness?! The trees. The green. The sun. The valleys. The weather! Oh my heck. I am SO excited. {p.s. we have some pretty exciting news that I will share in a couple of weeks :)}

Okay, one more thing. The mister and I will be in Canada for the next week, so I may or may not be able to post. Please forgive me for my lack of posts lately. We have been in the middle of moving, homeless, in the car for hours and hours...and hours. And we will be in a completely different country for the next week, so my posts may be lacking there too.

Have a lovely Friday!

A Little Laugh

Our cat is pretty funny sometimes. She gives me a good laugh.
And I laugh almost every time I watch this video.

STORY:
So, my husband bought our cat a cat harness, so that while we'e moving,
we don't have to worry about her running outside
and getting lost and us having to leave without her.
When he brought the harness home, we decided to take her for a little walk.

Now, let me just tell you that our cat LOVES being outside.
She will meow to come inside, but then won't actually come in.
{She's mostly an outdoor cat, but we let her in sometimes}.
She loves running around outside.
But now we've learned:
Stick her on a lease, and she won't budge.
Our little "walk" turning into more of a drag.

{p.s. I promise she wasn't hurt!}
{p.p.s. Did you notice the skull and crossbones on our harness? Haha}

Olympian Style

Apparently, it is the Olympian manner to look as ridiculous as possible whilst performing your said talent/sport/skill. Especially anything that requires concentration, turning, spinning, etc. And while I fully acknowledge the intense training, skill, motivation, and talent that these Olympic athletes, I still think these pictures are hilarious.

Ping Pong #3 {the best in my personal opinion}

But seriously, I have a lot of respect for these athletes. The Olympics are no joke. I can only imagine the hundreds to thousands of hours {or more} spent training for a 30 second event.

Good luck and may the best athlete win!

Lovely Linkup: Friday Letters

I don't know if my last post really emphasized my "busy-ness," but oh my heck! The mister and I have spent the last week packing, moving, driving, looking, and being really really tired.

I have to admit, I kind of love linking up to other blogs because it's kind of fun to join in this communal thing. Maybe I'm just unoriginal. Who knows ;)

Dear Friday,

{Black Iris Photography. Have I mentioned she's amazing??
Also, I'm kind of a nerd sometimes. This was taken in the most adorable little bookshop in northern Utah}

Dear Friday, Are you really here? This week has gone by so fast! Dear husband, thank you for driving so much this past week! I don't mind driving, but it sure is nice if you do :) Dear eyes, why do you hurt so much?? Dear iPhone, thanks for saving us about a million times this trip! Seriously, life would not be the same without you! Dear California, thanks for being much, much cooler than Texas. Especially at night. Dear me, Remember that you don't have to compare yourself to everyone else. It's hard I know. Especially when you know you can do better. You will get there, I promise. Just have faith. Dear bed, please stop calling me so vigorously! I'm trying!! Dear Amazing Blackberries that we bought at a roadside stand, I'm so sorry we completely forgot about you at the hotel we stayed at! I wish I could go back, but you are long gone by now. Dear Summer, pretty pretty please just go a little bit slower!

Hope you all had a wonderful Friday!

Homeless {but not Holmes-less}

{haha, get it? Not Holmes-less?
Like, cause our last name is Holmes?
Ha...ha?}

Okay, here's the story:
I am homeless
{Okay, technically, we {Jordan and I} are homeless}

So remember how I told you all that I was moving?
Well, we did.

Kind of.

Jordan and I are moving to California soon.
Like, we-have-to-be-there-in-September soon.

So, to save money, we decided to completely move out of our house,
Put everything in a storage unit,
and leave.

*Deep breath*
Here goes.

 Story:
Right before we left on our honeymoon
{literally, right before we left}
Jordan got news that we were to be at our next station by September 21.
Well, we were planning on going to Utah for a couple of weeks in August.
But then we wanted to go look for a house.

When we got back from our honeymoon,
we got permission {which is a big deal when you're in the military}
to go on "permissive TDY" {aka permission to go look for a house}
And combine it with leave {aka permission to go to Utah}.
 So we were planning to be gone for a month.
A month!

And when we get back, we will only be in town for a couple of weeks.
And then we are really {for reals} moving.

So since we were going to be gone for a month
And we have a few awesome friends who are willing to put up with us for a couple of weeks,
We decided to move out of our home,
Put it all into a storage unit {a very dusty one I might add}
And save the $1000+ it cost to live there.

But since we don't have a home in California
Or in Texas
{or anywhere else for that matter}
We literally, have no home.

And let me tell you,
it feels weird.

But I'm so grateful for good friends and family.
We would not have been able to do it without you...
{taking care of our cat
taking us in
watching our car
helping us move
etc
etc
etc}

p.s. Lots of driving + no stops + no wifi = no blogging time :(

Lovely Link-up: Is That Normal?

So, it's quite possible {likely even} that I am several days late to this link-up party over at Chalk in the Rain, but I was really excited when I saw it because the mister gets to answer these questions too! We'll see how he feels about this.

As I write, I am currently watching my good friend, Ariel, wash a dish that I dirtied {we are at her house right now}. I am thinking that I will involve her and her husband in this little questionnaire too. Ready?

1.
Is it normal for 2 men to hug?
Elyse: It depends. Family? Totally. Really good friends? Absolutely. Strangers? Probably not so normal.

Jordan {my mister}: It depends. I'd say it's normal for two friends to hug.

Ariel: Yeah. Caleb and his best friend got pictures at our wedding pretending to kiss each other. Friends or men that have an emotional reason to hug.
Caleb {Ariel's mister}: Ummm...yeah. {typical guy response :) }

2.
Is it normal to gag on your toothbrush while brushing?
Elyse: I do when I brush my tongue. But not if I'm just brushing my teeth, no.
Jordan: Normal is such a vague term. Uhh...normal? I don't know.
I can't say I've gagged on my toothbrush.
No, I'll say no. If I'm gagging on my toothbrush, it means I went too far.

Ariel: Nope.

Caleb: Depends on how well you're brushing your teeth.

3.
Is it normal wear the same bra daily?
Elyse: Ummm.............sometimes? I mean, I have never ever....done that...
Jordan: I'd say yes. I mean, I do...

Ariel: Yes, I wear the same one more than once at least.

Caleb: I don't. {Totally serious saying this}. I don't think it's abnormal. It depends on how much you like the bra I guess.

4.
Is it normal for grown women to frequently use the words "like" or "um" while speaking?
Elyse: I guess, it's, like, pretty, umm, common. So, like, yeah. Normal.

Jordan:Unfortunately, yes. In the context of valley girl. But otherwise, still yes.

Ariel: As in common? Yes.

Caleb: Ummm, like, I think so, like, yeah.

5.
Is it normal eat cake batter/dough?
Elyse: Yes. I LOVE cookie dough!! Yeah, it's probably not good, but it's SO good! I've never gotten sick.

Jordan: No. Well, cookie dough, yes. Cake batter seems a little weird to me.

Ariel: Yeah. I never did, but I think a lot of people do.

Caleb: Yeah. I think it's deliciously normal.

6.
Is it normal to go "commando" in public/at work?
Elyse: No. It feels weird. It makes me almost shudder just thinking about it.

Jordan: Sure. I guess we wouldn't know.
I find it uncomfortable, but if I had to do it, I would.

Ariel: It's not normal for me to go commando, but I think it's getting increasingly popular in society. I've noticed on TV that nobody wears underwear anymore.

Caleb: I don't think it's that normal.
 7.
Is it normal to have long toenails?
Elyse: No. I feel SO weird having even longish toenails. But I'm trying to actually have decent toenails to paint. But toenails that are too long are kind of gross.

Jordan: No. Oh good heavens. {I wish I could post his face when I asked this question. It was definitely one of disgust}

Ariel: No. That's gross.

Caleb: No.
 8.
Is it normal  to try on an article of clothing in the middle of the store?
Elyse: Yes, but only if you try it on over what you're already wearing. I've done that. Totally not normal to strip in the store. That's weird.

Jordan: It depends if you have to take something off or not.

Ariel: If it's an over clothing, like a jacket, yeah. But if it requires you to take off anything, then no.

Caleb: Depends on what it is, but generally no.
 9.
Is it normal to tell someone to be quiet or "shhhh" someone in a quiet setting?  ie. church, movie theater, meeting, etc.
Elyse: If the whole group is being loud and it's time to be quiet, I totally have no problem being that person that shushes everyone. If the person behind me is being loud, I am fine turning around and asking if they will please be quiet. But if it's something that I cannot control {i.e. a baby crying}, no. But I might wish that the parent take their kid into the hall. But I wouldn't say anything.

Jordan: Uhh, yes.

Ariel: If they're being obnoxious to everybody, then probably. But if they're being obnoxious to only you, then probably not.

Caleb: Yes.
 10.
It it normal to change clothes multiple times before leaving the house?
Elyse: Yes! Have you ever thought of a cute outfit in your mind, only to realize once you've put it on, that it's really not that cute? Yeah, that happens to me a lot. So yes. Totally normal. Plus, my husband has very little sense of style, so I sometimes make him change :)

Jordan: No. Only if you're married to my wife, who makes me change several times before I leave.

Ariel: If you're a girl.

Caleb: No.
